how old should tires get before replacing them on a camping trailer?
Public Comments
- When the treads wear out.
- When the tread is down to the tread wear indicators. If the tires still have tread on them but they are dry rotted (there are cracks in them) you should replace them.
- Just like any other tire with this exception.. if you haven't pulled the trailer in a while then check them for cracks on the wall.. if it has been sitting for a while and the tires could have become dried out (that is one of the things that happens to tires that causes them to loose their flexibilty).. if there are cracks.. you really need to get yourself some tire treatment and see if you can help restore the flex.. if not.. and you are planning on pulling it on a hot highway.. then you could be in for a big let down.. be sure to take some spares with you..
- The tires on the trailer should be in the same good condition, as the ones on your vehicle. If the tread is worn, replace them. Make sure the sidewalls are soft, not hard, especially if the tires are old. There is nothing worse, than going camping, and having a blow out, from the trailer tire. If you are not sure, tow it into a tire shop, and they will check them for free.
- It depends on the use of the trailer and where and how it is parked while not in use.
- for saftey,s sake, you dont want them to get down too far. if they are down too far, the tire,s have no way of gripping the road in a rain storm, and the camper has no way of tracking safley behind the tow vehicle. and that can create handling problems for the driver and possibly cause a accident
