Small Camping Trailers

My boyfriend and I want to take a cross country trip. Can we hitch a small camper/trailer on a Ford Focus ZX3?

(We basically just need somewhere to sleep at night when we don't use motels)

  1. First I would check the owners manual to find out what the towing capacity is for your vehicle. Next, there is a hitch available for your vehicle. It is #24692 and I found it by going to the following website :http://store.drawtite.com/trailerhitches1.html and put in your year, make, model, etc. The hitch listed here is $118.79, plus S&H. This price comes with the ballmount, pin, & clip. The hitch is rated for 2,000 lbs, but again check your owners manual for the weight your car can truly tow. The wiring for this vehicle would be #118002 assuming that the trailer your towing has a 4-flat plug for wiring. After those two parts, you'll just need a ball, and that depends on what size is on the camper coupler. Also, this is for a ZX3 2000-2007 and excludes the SVT & Street Appearance Package Hope this helps!
  2. better pack tents I would not advise towing trailer with this car not to mention the handling problems could cause car to drift off road in a high wind
  3. I would go to a ford dealer and ask them if you can pull a small trailer. because they can tell you how much you can tow with your car. For example I have a 2007 Subaru Impreza 170 hp. 5 speed My car is rated for 200lb tounge weight and 2000lb gross weight. Best of luck
  4. If you have an automatic transmission, NO. You will be buying a new transmission. I use to drag my VW GTI to and from races behind my 86 escort GT with out any problems. Did this for 6 years for up to 1400 miles one way. I have a 05 ZX4 that I tow a small tear drop behind now. No problems. if you have a manual, it should be ok
  5. once you are moving you should be fine i would reckon, taking off will be very slow. it would need to be a baby trailer though. try and put a fair bit of the stuff in the actual car rather than in the trailer. don't go to heavy as it will be rather unstable driving, all the weight will be on the back wheels and little on the front, that isn't to good on a front wheel drive car. if the car is an auto i would recommend fitting a transmission cooler. they aren't dear and will help keep the transmission cool. usually there are trans cooler lines running into the radiator, normally you run in a series with that one. have a safe trip and all the best!!
  6. A couple of things your Ford Focus will not be able to hand a small camper. Here is what I took on my trip across the usa with my prius. 1. Take Toilet Paper, Soap and Water 2. A tent 3. Some undergarments, shorts, pants, t-shirts 4. Computer and a data card you can get one from the evdo experts http://tinyurl.com/sxdd7 for free when you sign up for service or rent it from them without any contract. 5. Granola Bars 6. Fix it Flat in a can 7. Take your car to a mechanic to check it out before the trip Good luck have fun.
  7. I love my ZX3 but it is NOT ment for towing. I do tow my garden tractor app 5 miles on a small 4x8 lite wt trailor now and then but thats about it. Sorry.
